Culture and Tradition
Cultural Continuity
Sacred Principles
Three principles guiding all relationships:
ʔiisaak
– respect for all things
hišḥukʷiš c̕awaak
– everything is connected
ʔuuʔałuk
– to take responsibility
Stewardship rooted in sovereignty
For generations, Maa-nulth Nations have exercised authority over their hahuułi—lands, waters, and resources—guided by traditional laws, governance, and cultural values.
Language Preservation
Each Nation has a distinct Nuučaan̓uł dialect.
Projects like Huuʔaciy̓uk̓ʷap Ciqy̓ak (“Bringing Back Our Language”) help connect communities.
Traditional Knowledge
Knowledge systems—transmitted through stories, ceremony, and practice—continue to shape how we live, govern, and relate to the world.
Cultural Events
Each Nation hosts its own cultural gatherings, feasts, and seasonal events. These practices uphold teachings and bring generations together.
Stories and Teachings
Traditions carry history, law, and spirit. These are shared with care, and only as each Nation chooses.
