Leaders discuss equitable access to Maa-nulth commercial fishery

Leaders and representatives from Maa-nulth Treaty Nations and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans including DFO Minister Joanne Thompson came together July 18 in Campbell River, BC, on the traditional territory of the Ligwiłda’xw people, to discuss Maa-nulth nations equitable access to commercial fishing opportunities.
The Huu-ay-aht, Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’, Toquaht, Uchucklesaht, and Yuułuʔiłʔath First Nations (collectively, Maa-nulth First Nations) have initiated a pilot Incremental Community-based economic Fishing Plan for 2025 as a step towards advancing the goal of an equitable access commercial fishery as part of fully implementing the Maa-nulth Treaty.
