Maa-nulth First Nations Celebrate Commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation Legislation Reintroduction

Huu-ay-aht First Nations, Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations, Toquaht Nation, Uchucklesaht Tribe Government, and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government (collectively Maa-nulth First Nations), who are Modern Treaty Nations through the Maa-nulth Treaty, welcome the reintroduction of An Act Respecting the Commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation (CMTI), Bill C-10, in the House of Commons September 25, 2025.

This legislation represents a historic step forward for all Modern Treaty Nations. Since reclaiming self-governance through the Maa-nulth Treaty in 2011, our Nations have built governments, laws, and economies rooted in our cultural values and vision for the future.

“Treaty implementation is where promises become reality,” said Chief Councillor Wilfred Cootes of Uchucklesaht Tribe Government and President of The First Nations of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society. “Our Modern Treaty was built to empower our people to govern ourselves, steward our lands and waters, and create opportunity for our youth. This legislation helps ensure that Canada honours its commitments so that our Nations can keep building a stronger future for generations to come.

“The introduction of this Bill highlights Canada’s commitment to work with Modern Treaty Nations as true partners,” said Chief Councillor John Jack of Huu-ay-aht First Nations. “Our Treaty is a living relationship. Establishing a Commissioner will help make sure that relationship grows stronger through consistent and meaningful implementation. We hope all parties can come together to support this step to advancing the important work of reconciliation.”

The Maa-nulth First Nations urge all political parties to support this legislation and ensure its swift passage.
